Can music induce violent behaviour?

Listen to this brief video and answer the following questions in your notepad. Feel free to post a comment, BTW! I think this is a really interesting topic to discuss.
1. In the video, can you identify at least five things and people that are held responsible for violent behaviour?
2. Why did Marilyn Manson like listening to music as a child?
3. The young man at the end of the video with the blue shirt makes a case for why he believes some Marilyn Manson fans may be induced to violent behaviour. Do you agree?

  1. First of all, I think that the music that a person listen to, say a lot about this person. When I meet someone new I tend to ask what kind of music he or she listens to, of course I can be wrong about the first impression but I'm talking generally.

I agree about what the young man says that not everyone that sees a Lexus will buy it but some of them yes. In the case of Marilyn Manson is the same, not the 100% of people that listen to him will become violent but I'm sure that a big percentage yes.

Finally, I think that Marilyn Manson is a bit crazy, he says that he is someone to follow because he does what he wants and that's why people have fear of him. Unbelievable.

  2. I'm not a fan of Marilyn Manson, nor have I investigated his lyrics enough to form an opinion.
But here's some food for thought: the character played by Anthony Hopkins in "Silence of the Lambs" is a deranged serial killer who listens to classical music. I know it was just a movie (based on a best-selling book), but I wonder if Hannibal Lecter was inspired by an actual (English meaning of actual) person.

  3. Being so eclectic as I am... I believe this is a little ridiculous. How someone can be influenced to the point that he can loose the sense of reality and go shooting people. Come on. I have gone to live concerts of DIO, Blind Guardian, Iron Maiden and Deep Purple to name a few rock/heavy metal/power metal bands. Now I go almost every month to the concert Hall to listen to classical music. Is there a relationship between behavior and tastes? It depends on your mental sanity I think.

  4. I think I would have to agree with Daniel here. If we blame Marilyn Manson, then I think we'd also have to blame children's cartoons and your average Hollywood blockbuster, which are replete with violence.
There's a word we could use here which I find appropriate: scapegoat. Who knows what it means?
